Alright, so I’ve been digging into this whole “Spotlight Caches September” thing, and let me tell you, it’s been a bit of a journey. I wanted to share my experience, step-by-step, in case anyone else is running into similar puzzles.

Spotlight Caches September: What Gets Saved and How to Find It?

It all started when I noticed my Mac was feeling a bit sluggish. You know, that general “beachball of doom” kind of slowness. Being the curious type, I started poking around to see what was hogging resources. I fired up Activity Monitor, and that’s where I saw it – a process related to Spotlight indexing was going absolutely nuts.

The Investigation Begins

First thing I did was try the usual: restarting the Mac. Simple, right? Sometimes that’s all it takes. But nope, the Spotlight process was still chugging away like it was trying to index the entire internet.

So, I went down the Google rabbit hole. Turns out, Spotlight caches can sometimes get corrupted, or just plain huge, especially after a major system update or if you’ve been moving a lot of files around. September, with its usual macOS update, was a prime suspect. I’ve added a lot of photos in September.

Getting My Hands Dirty

Here’s what I did, step-by-step, to try and tame the beast:

  • Rebuild the Spotlight Index: I found out you can force Spotlight to rebuild its index. You do this by going to System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy. Then, you drag your entire hard drive into the list (this tells Spotlight not to index it). Wait a few seconds, then remove the hard drive from the list. This forces Spotlight to start fresh.
  • Wait…and Wait Some More: Rebuilding the index takes time. Like, a lot of time, depending on how much stuff you have on your computer. I let it run overnight.
  • Check for Problem Files: I’d read that sometimes a single corrupted file can cause Spotlight to hang. This one was trickier. I didn’t have any specific errors, so I just kept an eye on Activity Monitor to see if any particular folder seemed to be causing issues.

The (Somewhat) Happy Ending

After letting the index rebuild overnight, things were much better. The Spotlight process was still running, but it wasn’t consuming a ridiculous amount of resources anymore. My Mac felt snappy again!

I’m still keeping an eye on things, and if the problem comes back, I might try excluding some specific folders from Spotlight indexing (like maybe my massive photo library). But for now, I’m calling this a win. It wasn’t the most glamorous tech adventure, but hey, sometimes the most satisfying fixes are the ones that just get your computer working smoothly again. I’m hoping to keep my mac faster after I’ve done the steps.
