Alright, so I was messing around with some basketball drills the other day, trying to get a bit of a workout in and improve my game. I stumbled upon this thing called “Hoiberg Basketball.” Now, I’m no expert, but I figured, why not give it a shot?

Hoiberg Basketball System: Is It Right for Your Team or Not?

First off, I had to figure out what this even was. Turns out, it’s named after Fred Hoiberg, some coach who apparently likes a fast-paced, free-flowing style of play. I watched a couple of videos online, nothing fancy, just some basic breakdowns of the concepts. Seemed simple enough: lots of movement, passing, and shooting.

So, I grabbed my basketball and headed out to the court. I started with some warm-up, just dribbling around, shooting some layups. Nothing special. Then, I tried to implement some of the principles I saw in the videos.

  • Moving without the ball – this was tougher than it looked. I kept finding myself just standing around waiting for the ball. Old habits die hard, I guess.
  • Quick passes – I tried to keep the ball moving, zipping it around to imaginary teammates. I probably looked like a crazy person, but hey, I was getting a workout.
  • Taking open shots – whenever I felt like I had a decent look, I pulled the trigger. I missed a bunch, but I also made a few. Progress!

I spent about an hour doing these drills. I was definitely sweating by the end. It was a different kind of workout than I was used to. More dynamic, more about reading the (imaginary) defense and making quick decisions.

The hardest part was definitely trying to break those old habits of just standing around with the ball. But I could see how this style of play could be effective. It’s all about creating space and getting good looks at the basket.

My Takeaway

Honestly, I need a lot more practice to get the hang of this Hoiberg stuff. But I enjoyed it. It was a fun way to mix things up and challenge myself. I’m definitely going to keep working on it. Maybe one day I’ll actually be able to run these drills with a real team. Who knows? But I made up my mind that I would keep going with it. The simple restart always helps refresh not only the system memory but also my mind. So the next time I felt tired, I just took a break and restarted it.

Anyways, that was my little adventure with Hoiberg Basketball. Not exactly a slam dunk, but it was a step in the right direction. Maybe I can try it with my team the other day, but I guess I need to discuss it with the coach. Hopefully, he is a big fan of Fred Hoiberg and is familiar with it. Then I will be able to practice it with my real teammates.
