Okay, so I saw this headline about Terence Crawford being named “champion in recess” by the WBC, and I was like, “What the heck does that even mean?” So, I started digging.

Champion in Recess: WBCs Crawford Announcement (What Happens Next)

First, I hit up the usual boxing news sites. You know, the big ones. They all had the basic news – WBC made this announcement, Crawford is still undefeated, blah blah blah. But none of them really explained what “champion in recess” actually is.

So, I went deeper. I started looking at the WBC’s website itself. I figured they must have the rules and regulations somewhere. It was a bit of a maze, honestly. Lots of official-sounding stuff, but not super easy to find what I was looking for.

After some clicking around, I found a section on their rules. And there it was! “Champion in Recess.” Basically, from what I could understand, it’s like a temporary pause on being the champion. It’s for situations where a boxer can’t defend their title for a while, maybe because of an injury, a legal issue, or something like that. They are allowed to petition the WBC to get their full champion status back.

My understanding of the process:

  • Crawford became undisputed champ.
  • He hasn’t defend the WBC.
  • WBC announced this “champion in recess” thing.
  • Crawford can get back to his champion.

So, I put all the pieces together. It seems like Crawford’s situation is… unique, I am not sure the detail. But this “champion in recess” thing lets him step away for a bit without completely losing his title. And it will be a big fight when he does.

Anyway, that’s my understanding of it all. It took a bit of researching, but I think I figured it out. Hopefully, this helps someone else who was confused by that headline!
