Alright, let’s talk about this Lamar Jackson versus Russell Wilson thing. It’s something I’ve been kicking around in my head lately, watching games, seeing the takes online. It got me thinking, so I figured I’d walk through how I sort of landed on my own thoughts about it.

Lamar Jackson or Russell Wilson: Which quarterback has more upside for the next season? Lets look at the potential gains.

So, I started off just thinking about the obvious stuff. You know, Lamar, the guy who can run circles around defenses, MVP stuff. Then Russ, the Super Bowl winner, the guy who used to sling those moon balls back in Seattle. They felt like two totally different worlds for a quarterback.

I decided to actually sit down and spend some time on this, not just go off old memories. I went back and watched some game film. Not just the highlight reels everyone shares, but digging into regular plays, third downs, how they handle pressure when the pocket breaks down. You gotta see the whole picture, right?

Watching Them Play

First, I looked at Russ. Man, I remember watching him with the Seahawks. He had that magic, escaping trouble, launching deep ones perfectly. Pure playmaker. But then, gotta be honest, watching his recent games, especially that Denver stint… it just felt different. Something seemed off. He still has flashes, sure, but that consistency I remembered? It wasn’t always there. It made me pause.

Then I switched over to Lamar. Everyone talks about the running, and yeah, it’s unbelievable. Nobody moves like him. But what I really focused on this time was his passing. People used to knock him for it, but watching him now, he’s clearly put in the work. He’s making tougher throws, seems more comfortable in the pocket when he needs to be. He’s not just a runner who throws anymore; he’s a real dual-threat QB. That evolution stood out to me.

Trying to Make Sense of It

So here’s where I got stuck for a bit. It’s a tough comparison.

  • Experience: Russ has been around longer, seen more, got that ring. You can’t just ignore that.
  • Current Form: Lamar feels like he’s still got that high ceiling, maybe still getting better as a passer. Russ… well, bouncing back, maybe? But there are question marks after the last couple of years.
  • Style: Lamar’s style is just game-breaking in a unique way. Russ, when he was on, had that clutch deep ball magic.

I thought about durability too. Lamar’s had some injuries pop up, often late in the season, which is a concern with his play style. Russ has generally been pretty tough throughout his career, though he had that finger injury.

It kinda felt like comparing apples and oranges, but you gotta make a call sometimes, even if it’s just for your own peace of mind or settling a debate with buddies.

Where I Landed

After going back and forth, watching the tape, thinking about where both guys are right now in their careers, I leaned towards Lamar. It’s not disrespect to Russ, not at all. What he did in Seattle was amazing. But based on what I’ve seen recently, the trajectory, the sheer impact Lamar has on a game, offensively… that’s hard to bet against.

For me, it’s about the current electricity and potential. Lamar seems to have improved his passing game to complement his insane running ability. Russ is trying to recapture his old form, and maybe he will with Pittsburgh, but Lamar feels like the safer bet for dynamic playmaking today. That’s just my two cents after spending some time really looking at it. Could change next season, football’s crazy like that, but that’s the conclusion my little practice session led me to.
