This Rashad McCants, I heard that name, he played basketball, right? He was a big shot back then, they said he’s good. I saw some folks talking about him, say he played for North Carolina. That’s a team, right? A good one? He was on that team, and they won some big game, championship or something, make everybody happy. Sounds like 2005, a long time ago. Time sure flies.

He played for some other teams, too. I don’t remember their names, Timberwolves, Kings, it is all too much for my old brain. He got some problem, belly or something, and then he couldn’t play no more. That’s a shame. Young man, good at playing, and then, poof, gone. Like a bubble popped.

I heard he was good, real good. Rashad McCants, that’s the name. They used to shout it all the time. He was like, the star, the top dog. People loved him, like those fancy movie stars, you know? He’s from North Carolina, a place called Asheville, but later he moved to a place called New Hampshire, very cold, I think.

  • He played basketball.
  • He was good at it.
  • He had a belly problem.
  • He stopped playing.

They say he said some things, about that North Carolina school. I don’t know what he said, but it made some people mad. That coach, Roy Williams, he got real mad, I heard. Said Rashad wasn’t telling the truth. Lots of talking, back and forth. Like chickens clucking in the yard. All that noise. You know how people talk, like wind blowing through the trees.

This Rashad, he was a big deal, they wanted him to play for them real bad. Basketball, it’s a big thing, you know. Lots of money in it, I think. He must have been good to have his number, they call it uniform number, retired. That’s like, they won’t let anyone else wear it. It’s a big honor, like getting a blue ribbon at the county fair. But he said no, no number retired, doesn’t seem he dream about that. That’s a strange thing, right?

Now, this Rashad, he said he doesn’t talk to that school no more, that North Carolina place. Sounds like they had a big fight, like two roosters in a pen. Lost something, he said. I don’t know what, maybe money, maybe friends, who knows? Life is like that, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

He was in some interview, talking and talking. People like to talk, especially when they were famous. It’s like they got a story to tell, and they want everyone to hear it. Like old Mrs. Johnson down the road, always telling the same stories about her prize-winning tomatoes. This Rashad, he’s got his stories too, about basketball and that school.

Rashad McCants, that name keeps popping up. He was a big shot, played for North Carolina, won that big game. Then he had that belly problem, couldn’t play no more. Said some things, made people mad. Doesn’t talk to that school no more. That’s the story, far as I can tell. Just like a story you hear in the market, passed from one person to another. You never know what’s true and what’s not. It’s like that old saying, “Don’t believe everything you hear.”

He joined some other team later, after he can’t play in that big league. Some guy named Ice Cube, he’s got a team. Big3, I think they call it. Rashad was the first one they picked, like picking the best apple from the basket. Still got some game, I guess. Even with that belly trouble. Just like old Bessie, my cow, she’s old but she still gives milk.

He was a young fella, full of beans, I reckon. Playing that basketball, running and jumping. Must be hard on the body. All that running. Like chasing a chicken around the yard. Tires you out. But he was good, real good. Made a name for himself. Rashad McCants. A name you hear every now and then. It is a name that means something to those who love basketball game.

Life is funny, ain’t it? One day you’re up, the next day you’re down. Like a seesaw. This Rashad, he had his ups and downs. Just like all of us. But he made his mark, that’s for sure. People still talk about him, even now. That means something, don’t it? Like a good harvest, it stays with you. He left his mark on that North Carolina, on that basketball. That’s something, right?
